|About T.J. Peng|
|T.J. first tried yoga in 1994, while he was a student at University of California, Santa Cruz, studying biology and psychology. He had an ulterior motive for doing yoga - he was learning to surf and skate but was uncoordinated and off balance, and a childhood friend had suggested him to do yoga. So he enrolled in the beginners yoga class for a quarter at UCSC with his first yoga teacher Julie Kimball (Iyengar). Through yoga, self-discovery, and the spontaneous prose of Jack Kerouac, he discovered there was more to life than meets the eye.|
He continued yoga on and off, until in 2002 while studying to become a chiropractor, he became in charge of the wellness and yoga club on campus. He was faced with the challenge of actually teaching yoga to fellow chiropractic students. Around that time, he had also discovered Vipassana meditation as taught by SN Goenkaji. Through the silent meditation retreat, he found out that one of the fellow meditators had a yoga studio in Santa Monica, California, called 'Power Yoga'. His name is Bryan Kest. As T.J. immersed himself in the Yoga Subculture of Santa Monica and Venice, he discovered that the roots of all these studios branched out from one studio - the 'YogaWorks'. He did his first Teacher training there with Lisa Walford and Annie Carpenter and following his first TT he was mentored by Jasmine Lieb and Julie Kleinman. He started to study Ashtanga yoga regularly with Chuck and Maty. Eventually he found his way to India to pay Homage to Sri BKS Iyengar, and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in 2004-2005 (Pune and Mysore). He then continued with his second Teacher training with Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor in Boulder, Colorado. He continued to study in other lineages of Krishnamacharya with AG Mohan and his son, Kausthub Desikachar, and Sri Vatsa Ramaswami. As he is discovering the roots of modern yoga, like all roads leads to Rome, almost all modern yoga leads to one man, Sri Krishnamachrya. He also enrolled in Loyola Marymount University's yoga philosophy programme and was certified in green yoga. These days, T.J. regularly studies with Richard Freeman, Mary Taylor, Bryan Legere (wall rope yoga), and Chuck Miller.
Having a background in Applied Kinesiology and the triad of health, T.J. focuses his classes on alignment, sequencing and adapting the yoga to the individual, whether it is using props, modifications or variations, so that everyone, young and old, big or small can feel the benefits of yoga, which are based on the principles of Krishnamacharya and as explained to him by Chuck Miller, Richard Freeman and all of his Iyengar teachers. His classes put emphasis on finding the Root and foundation of each pose (Asana), expand and lengthen through the core (bandha), by listening to the fluidity of the in breath and the out breath (Pranayama).
